Rick Dutrow’s ban ends. He has to apply for a license.

Wonder whether he will apply in NY or get started in one of the "easier" licensing jurisdictions?

To set the record straight, the worst screwing over in horse racing is when some POS trainer cheats.

Why is the ban being lifted? Because he hasn't cheated in years now?

No one will convince me this is any way good for the game.
For him, maybe, but not racing.

Bad move.

The ban isn't being lifted. The ten years are up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_E._Dutrow_Jr.

Certainly trained some good ones.

Maybe most known for the run in the Triple Crown with Big Brown, but also trained the likes of Saint Liam, Silver Train, and Court Vision among others.

10 years is a long time to be away.

I didn't like Dutrow at all and felt the punishment justified. But it's a very important principle that if you serve your time and take your lumps, you should be able to rehabilitate yourself. Even many people who commit serious, violent crimes, get a second chance when they get out of prison.

If he qualifies for a license under the same criteria everyone else has to meet, he should get his license and I wish him luck.

He was crucified for his personality. 2 years would have been more in line with his bad deeds. Maybe even 1 year

Hong Kong

when it comes to how to govern our industry and rooting out bad actors, there should be a hard look at whatever is happening in Hong Kong, the most trustworthy jurisdiction by far

funny how people talk about corruption on a global basis, yet the most trustworthy racing is in China

I'm not sure you can conclude much from that. Hong Kong's super-clean, highly regulated racing is a holdover from British Colonial Rule (indeed, when I first went to Sha Tin, it still had an empty, luxurious "Royal Box" maintained in case the Queen or some high ranking royal decided to come to the races there). China has not tinkered very much with it (unlike, sadly, many other aspects of Hong Kong that they have interfered with), but that probably reflects the fact that the Beijing government just doesn't care enough about horse racing.

I’ll take the stance on Dutrow more seriously when tracks don’t pick and choose who to come down on. For example, how the hell is JKX Racing allowed to run horses at Aqueduct yesterday and today?

whatever the reason, HK manages not to have the ongoing controversies we see with so many trainers, the list here is long, the list there of trainers with any controversies is zero

I liked Dutrow.

It may be bias for rooting for him as a child, familiarity and home-team Maryland, but he didn't turn my stomach.
