Does horse racing need a Triple Crown winner?

Do you think the sport of horse racing needs a Triple Crown winner?
It's been 34 years since Affirmed won it.

Will a win by I'll Have Another in the 2012 Belmont benefit the sport, or will it be business as usual from the day after?

Short-term modest benefit...no lasting impact.

I agree. I think a movie like Sea Biscuit, or a show like Luck, would be more likely to have a lasting impact.

IMO...nothing short of a complete reorganization of the sport can have a positive lasting impact.

That would have happened already if the idea of combining a casino and race track hadn't come along.

I wouldn't say it "needs" one, as there are certainly things it needs more. That said, the attention is positive and I don't see any negatives. People that can effectively argue that IHA isn't worthy are already on a extreme. They either know the sport inside and out, or they hate it and won't support it regardless. To the vast middle, winning the TC automatically makes him the best in a generation.

Yes it needs a Triple Crown winner, but only if he isn't immediately retired.

Reddam doesn't seem like the type who would immediately retire I'll Have Another...but a Triple Crown will do funny things to you I suppose...so we won't know until it happens...

And, in conjunction with that, curtail the numer of racing days, especially in the winter. It worked fine with winter racing at Santa Anita, Florida and Fair Grounds. And, eliminate that endless summer Calder meet. Make California one circuit again. Start Chicago racing in spring, not the dead of winter at a track that is ugly even in good weather.

I voted yes.

The world has changed a hell of a lot since the last one and it would be fascinating to find out what kind of effect it would have.

I hope we see it, I think we will and regardless of what I or anyone thinks of the connections I really do believe it'll be good for the game.
