There are two kinds of Greeks...my friend.
The ones who have remained in Greece, and the ones who have migrated to other countries.
The ones who have migrated to other countries are among the hardest working people in existence...and I know this for a fact because I have dealt with them in a big way for almost 40 years.
Many of them came to this country in their adult years, bringing with them young children...but, after working very long hours at the most menial jobs, they were able to accomplish things that even the natives of this country were unable to accomplish -- even with all the advantages they enjoyed, comparatively speaking.
The forty-hour work week doesn't exist for the immigrant Greeks...regardless of economic conditions. They have worked 60-hour weeks for many years...because they know what true poverty is...and they do what needs to be done so they can keep abreast of it.
Unfortunately...our work ethic did not rub off on our native brethren...who have been lulled to sleep by the corrupt political system that has governed them for many years now.
It's one thing to have corrupt political leadership in a large, powerful country...and it's quite another to have widespread government corruption in a small country like Greece.
The shit hits the fan in a hurry...
