trevor coming back to Del Mar

He's 68 and probably will be rusty with a year off, but he is an institution out here at this point.

He was already rusty. Maybe the break will do him some good but that is highly unlikely.

Great news!

I didn't mind Larry Collmus announcing in the summer/fall but Trevor has been the person that I have known the longest working there when I started watching Del mar

With the anticipated small fields at Del Mar, the rust won't show much....

I have no specific inside information here, but Wrona- who I agree is a great announcer- has been fired from a lot of jobs, including Hollywood twice (by different owners) and Santa Anita.

For some reason, and I don't know why, "Australian" based announcers always seem to have more difficulty than others, in regard to employment. Most would be much better off having a polished/seasoned agent representing them for the elite track openings and contract negotiations, than trying to represent themselves....IMO.

I am not Australian (Praise The Lord!) but I knocked around a few tracks in my early days (though not as many as it looked as they were often different assignments for the same parent company with a lot of fill-in work.)

In my case having virtually no support network (largely my fault) combined with the loneliness of being in a vast country made me incredibly insecure. One tried to hide it but then it comes over as being standoffish and it causes you to say and do dumb things but also limits your ability to communicate. A vicious circle.

Life events happen and eventually I found that support network I needed to become a better person. Going through those experiences is why I think I have gone from 18 days calling a year to 140 or so in two years. I think those experiences have made me a better race caller.

Not saying it is the same for everyone else who comes to the USA and is involved in race calling, but finding people who truly believe in you and believing they believe in you when you live in a different culture is an experience I have learned many immigrants have problems dealing with.

Craig.

Great insight Craig and glad too see how far you have come. My hats off to race callers. I can't remember family members birthdays let alone names of horse running at 30MPH looking through bino's. I am not sure either but some close friends that I know who work and train at SA said that the stronachs had some beef with Wrona but again that is rumors. Frank calls a great race too, don't get me wrong. I bet Australian races at night and think they are some of the best callers in my opinion. Having the same color saddle clothes have to be tough as well.

Many Thanks. I have no clue about what that situation was at Santa Anita. I have definitely been influenced by the Aussie callers but I also think in Australia it is seen as more of a "profession" and errors just are not tolerated. You have to prove yourself before you get a shot behind the mic. I was fifteen when I called my first jumps race in the UK and had been practicing on track for at least three years before that! I can never remember peoples names, but if they all wore jockeys silks, I would know them each and every time!!

While appreciating the compliment, I feel compelled to correct your statement. I left Hollywood Park in 2000 of my own volition, and many of my job losses have been circumstantial, e.g. tracks closing. Some were “political,” the result of ownership or management changes, but I could provide sterling references from all past employers.

Thank you for clearing this up...as it has been a topic of conversation for years by all of the "experts".

It has always been nice to listen to your work. Thank you for what you do.

Trevor was the greatest at one time, many many years ago. He makes too many mistakes during race calls and doubt the layoff will help.
