FWIW, I knew from the time when GP opened its new configuration that the turf course was more than 7 furlongs around. But I had no idea about the main track until the Arrogate race.

Yeah, when the rail is at 0 it is pretty obvious. Of course Gulfstream doesn't say this, they tell people it is 7f on their web site.

I think that particular untruth is rather common in American racing. A lot of tracks say they have "7 furlong" turf courses whose courses are a bit longer than that. The typical course inside a mile dirt oval is 7 furlongs plus a few yards.

This is more than a few yards, quite a bit more.

True. But I am just saying when someone says a "7 furlong turf course", I don't think people expect it to be exact. Whereas ee do with the msin track.

I expect to be told what the exact distance is of every track. That really shouldn't be too much to ask. Just out of curiosity and because I'm iced in for a few days I'll check a few tracks in Google Earth tomorrow.

7 46.20 83.82

These averages are for all races and I have not had the time to confirm all of the times but they are really close.

What is the logic for them having two different versions of the same distance when they run do few races every year?

Seems like only one would be needed.

You have connections and a good reason to need to know it, and can certainly find that out. But a website that describes a track can certainly round it off since everyone other than speed figure gurus does.

I don't agree with that and it has nothing to do with speed figures. Why list a track as a distance that it isn't? A few feet I guess I could understand, but that isn't the case on the GP turf. All I ever say is that tracks should give bettors accurate information. We'll take it from there. Gulfstream really seems to struggle with that on a variety of fronts.

There is no reason, if the facts are known, no matter the issue, they shouldn't be given. If the course is 7 furlongs + 48 yards, just say it. It's as CJ says, tell us the facts, and let us take it from there. It's not a negative in anyway.

There are a couple of Harness tracks that I have questions about.

One in particular is Pocono Downs. They post faster final times there than at the 1-mile tracks. I wonder if it's actually shorter than 5/8?

Can this be verified by anyone?

Thanks for the link CJ on Pocono.

Still, i think there could be more to it.
That article was put out by the track's publicity department.

The surface may indeed be great - and fast - but can't it also be shorter?
Who could verify?

Is it something I, or anyone, could do with Google Earth?

----

On Gulf's 'about' 7 1/2 turf course.

Haven't seen anyone mention that two races (10,12) were taken OFF the turf last Sunday, and run at 7F on the Main Track.

(It's in the official Equibase charts for those two races.)

If i remember, they avoided the "inner" rail placement.

No reason was ever given by the track announcer at the time for the changes.

The turf course was uneven according to the riders. Soft on the turn.

No one actually verified there was any turf left on it.

They are trying to figure out if they can place the temporary rail far enough out so that the races are on the turf at GPW.

Yes, you can do it on Google Earth. I've done it with Gulfstream.
