Wonder where all the Cali horses are--they aren't at GGF...and many days they can be scarce @ SA. Hollywood Park and Bay Meadows are gone--what the hell?

Santa Anita not much better, and this is what we get on a Saturday. Still way too much racing for the current horse population.

California should do what they used to in Ohio, half the card from SA and half from GG.
They could have 10 races a day and not over-use either track.
NY? Most east coast tracks are not even open yet.
I understand Belmont only washed the saddle cloths numbers 1-5 for this season?

I'm looking at a race at Laurel, and it looks like a John Wayne movie - whole screen full of horses like the cavalry.

This happens almost every year during this "transition" period into the spring.
Once the horse start coming in from Gulfstream and elsewhere, things get better at the big "A"

I still cannot fathom as to why the fields in So cal are so short. GG is not in the same league.
NYRA is almost as bad. I bet once Belmont opens there will be more short fields. it happened last spring as well.
I took three days at random.
In all fairness I used One weekday, one Saturday and one Sunday..
So I picked Fri May 1 Thru Sunday May 3 of 2015..
Keep in mind May 2nd was Derby Day..Oh, no rain and no races off the turf....
Friday May 1st....68 (7.55 per race) horses entered. 58( 6.44) went to post
Saturday 5/12, 12 races.....109 entered (9.08) 93 went to post( 7.75) Note. On this day there were two turf races where the entry box was full ( 16 entered, 12 went)
Sunday 5/3, 9 races.....73 entered( 8.11) 67 ( 7.44) started...
The all sources handle for 5/1 was $9 million
for 5/2 it was $13.4 million...Three graded stakes on the card. The Westchester( Palice Malice scratched, Tonalist won) The Sheepshead Bay( 5 entered 5 went) and the Fort Marcy
Sunday 5/3 handle was 9.5 Million....
I then took an April weekend 2015 from AQU and the fields were definitely shorter.
This was again a Friday-Sunday deal....The main track and turf courses were in use. Again, no rain to wipe out any turf races.
Friday 4/16...8 races....49 went to post avg 6.12 per race
Sat 4/17...9 races 61 started 6.77
Sunday 4/18 9 races...55 starters 6.11

Why would they want to stick slot machines @ either Cali Facility--when they have fully-licensed Vegas-type Indian Casinos all over the state? That market is already cornered here--who wants to play the ponies when you have action like that going on?
This chart is from the 4th race last Fri @ GGF. 7 horses entered--4 scratched.
HORSEPLAYERS don't want to go here--much less any casual fan. Young people certainly don't want to go--not when there's at least 4 casinos within a couple hours drive of GGF. Note the handle for the DD.
The exacta wasn't a bad payoff--very winnable and you got 3.5X your wager --some doofus dumped a few grand on the 4-7...only way to explain that payoff.

I've had a sensational Aqueduct inner track meet so I can't complain. I loved the racing, from a bettor's view point, lots of overlays and longshot winners that figured.
