NYRA to continue Belmont At The Big A meet

Nice seeing NYRA having a BAQ to BAQ meet for Aqueduct here

I'm thinking I'm going to need to be sure to get back east next spring for a last chance to experience the "old" Belmont.

I wonder whether there are any business reasons for this along with the reconstruction of the courses. Is it cheaper to operate at Aqueduct (smaller facility)?

We lose money running that meet at Aqueduct as opposed to Belmont. A simple look at the handle numbers makes that clear.

It will. It starts the Thursday before the Derby.

Then why the switch back to Aqu for the fall meet?
Presumably, the track will be fit for racing in the spring, or is it the need for Belmont to host the Belmont Stks?

The article notes the "reconstruction" of the racing surfaces. This will be more than just a "resurfacing" of a main track and/or repairs/overseeding of a turf course. And as we've seen lately - the reconstruction of a turf course requires TIME before it's usable.

Thanks - I haven't had time to read the article yet

I honestly look forward to NY turf racing here in November. There's just something about 6 furlong sprints on the AQU outer... and 8.5 furlongs on the inner... combined with the early first down pour of rain in November that just make for great betting opportunities.

Didn't see it coming... but the BAQ meet really dulled the edge to this year's Nov turf racing. Obv temporary... but the trade off of 9F-12F races from the Belmont condition book just didn't fit the aqueduct race track.

It could also be just me at the moment... I really haven't looked into it deeply.. and I feel complete burnt out from racing at this point of the year.

I just thought it was a subtle point that nobody mentioned and certainly one I didn't expect and will expect next year.

The article has a quote “before the traditional Aqueduct fall meet, which runs from Nov. 2 through Dec. 31”, those dates corresponding to a NYRA press release describing the Fall Meet as running through the end of the year.

In years past the AQ Fall meet ended on the weekend of the Cigar Mile. Racing that occurred after that became part of the Winter meet that runs through March. NYRA racing strikes me as changing significantly after Cigar Mile weekend. The jockey colony changes, some of the trainers vamoose, and those that remain are mostly running different stock–at least for maiden and allowance races.

In keeping with this re-branding, Equibase is going to report this year’s Fall Meet statistics combining all of December with November. It’s hardly of earth-shaking consequence…but if one tracks trainer or other statistics by meet, it makes a difference. Personally speaking, my database for the AQ Fall meet (& the year 2022) is going to end on December 4th.
