Small contest question

The OTB I work at is going to do a small handicapping contest. Night racing so it will be Los Al. Eight races, mythical $2 WP. I have a couple of questions:

- If we determine the winner by total mutual payout, what would you set the limit for on payouts? $40 win and $20 place?

- If we have a tie at the end of the night, what would be a good tie-breaker?

It's is going to be a $10 entry fee plus $500 added, we figure we will get maybe 20 entries. Please let me know of any pitfalls you can see with this. Thanks.

That is typical in the limits, its usually 20/1 and 10/1 so add the extra $2 of the bet for $42 and $62, if you want to be typical.

Most winners picked is usually the the first tiebreaker.

Now ties happen more frequently with very small contests, could be a situation where first and second just split.

Thanks! We were going to pay down to 3rd. $500/$150/$50 The idea is to keep the players there playing.

I think you're on the right track.

On behalf of the players thanks for adding the $500

The added $500 is very generous if you're expecting 20 players at a $10 fee.

It should be very popular.

Not in the Chicago area, sorry. We are north county San Diego. We are going to advertise it for a few weeks ahead of time so I will let you all know when that starts.

In $2 WP contests the cap usually mirrors the NHC which is $64 ($42 win, $22 place).

My experience in one-track contests (I am playing one tonight at the Red Mile on Del Mar races) is the total needed to win, on average is 2 - 2.5 x the bankroll. So if there are seven races you need to shoot for a total of $56 to $84 in mutuels.
