Tiago Pereira on Zillinda, big favorite in the 1st on April 26 at Santa Anita.

Nothing dramatic here. He just took the 6-5 favorite 4 wide on the first turn and 3 wide on the second turn. This is what I call the "Cigar ride", because Jerry Bailey used to do it when Cigar was 10 lengths better than the other horses he was facing. The ground loss didn't matter.

The problem is most horses aren't Cigar, and ground loss matters. Zillinda lost by a neck in the end to Shanghai Barbie, whom she was unable to run down in the stretch after running so much farther than Shanghai Barbie did. She was probably 4 lengths the best horse.

Have a lot of respect for what these guys do for a living, that said. Junior's ride on the Letterman today in Saratoga's last was horrible.

I'd like to echo your sentiments as well. How many times can you stop a horse's momentum, yet persist with any reasonable idea that the horse can achieve a successful outcome? That race was horrible for the

Rispoli on the Ya Beauty in the 11th on Sunday 8/30 at Del Mar.

He probably had the best horse in the race and finished in the back of the pack. How? By just getting repeatedly blocked. Wait, check, steady. Wait, check steady. That horse is still looking for racing room on his way back to the barn.

Some days the holes don't open. Many times they do for a guy who rides as well as Rispoli.

From August 14th Twitter exchange:

Random Tweeter:
"My guy @umbyrispoli has his head in the clouds today, making all the wrong moves. Let’s go!"

@umbryrispoli:
"You right man,
And you think I'm happy?
unfortunately all my hole they went close today and every decision I make it,it was the wrong one,I'm always trying to give my horses every chance!....just bad days at office, can happen right?
I will get you back that money don't worry"

Over the previous 10 days he was 11-42 with a +13% ROI, so he would have gotten that guy's money back. (Even though he is getting bet more and more.)

How bad was the ride of Ramon Vazquez on the #10 Willow Moon in the third at Oaklawn? Broke on top by at least two, gathered her up allowed three others to take control while he was parked in the middle of the track in the turn, should be called into the stewards office tomorrow morning to explain during the break.

Strongly disagree. If he didn’t drop back off the pace it would have been a four way speed duel and he would have caught the worst of it being wide. It’s either blow the horse out or drop back and close off a perfect break. Muddy track has a significant effect on any pace scenario. The horse just didn’t have it.

Tiago Pereira on Fashionably Fast in the Tiznow Stakes. He DID win. But he did the "Cigar ride" again. He was on the 4 to 5 favorite and put him 4 wide in a 4 horse speed duel on the first turn, and then 3 wide and 2 wide on the far turn. He lost a lot of ground. And as a result, chalk players had to bite their nails as the horse gutted out a photo finish victory in a 3 horse driving finish. This race should not have been close.

Do not know what to say on that one. I for one do not like to see a horse that is done whipped, but at least a hand ride to the end would have been appropriate here.

at best he was a POS for quitting once he knew he wasn't getting 3rd.
Have to fine him and give him meaning ful days, and release a press release with the fine/days/ statement to the public.

also today Geroux had Mandoulin(sp) who was a solid but not spectacular contender and a favorite, and he completely ruined the betting race and the horse's chances by riding as if he was riding Justify or Big Brown instead of a mediocre fringe Derby points horse with a chance to advance on a circuit.
Really a bad time to throw in an awful ride.

It's "possible" he felt something in the horse's action he didn't like and wrapped up to avoid injury. Pay attention to whether the horse makes it back to the track on schedule.

If he just gave up, the owners are going to be just as pissed off as some bettors.
