Hard drive
I couldn't get on my computer at all yesterday and now. It did a 'self repair' on itself and couldn't. It will not open anything or load windows. I did get to do a F12 key and get to a diagnosis test. Did full test, everything green but the hard drive, red x. This is what came up next and told me to copy it (for a tech guy I would guess)....
Error code 2000-0142
Validation 90014
Msg, hard drive O-S/N 9QJ56029
short test unsuccessful
Am I dead in the water? Or could this be worth saving, I love my set up.
Dell Optiplex 790 / Win 10 PRO duel flat screen monitors and 2 Ter.
Thing I'm asking is, does definitely have to go to shop. I never had a hard drive problem
I won't be near a computer til Tonight, thanks

It does sound like a dead drive. I hope you have a backup as data recovery -- if possible -- is super expensive. However, it's possible that the drive won't boot but you can still retrieve the data from it. You could get another boot drive, but you will have to contact Dell about Windows. OEM versions of Windows are tied to the hardware so it may not be possible to restore to a usable legit version, especially if you don't have separate recovery CDs.

Likely, it's either problem with the hard drive, or it could be a loose power cable or data cable to the hard drive. You don't have to throw away your computer.
Here is someone explaining that Dell error code:
If it is a loose cable, you can easily fix that yourself. Unplug your computer power cable (important), then open the case and check to see if the power and data cables to the hard drive are fully seated at both ends of the cable.
If the hard drive is failing (or has failed) and if you have not backed-up your data, you will need to focus on recovering your data. Don't keep trying to boot from that drive.
Instead, boot from a live OS and see if you can mount the drive and access the data. This is absolutely free, and it is very easy if you have already made a live CD/DVD or a live USB.
If you can't mount the hard drive, then there are free data recovery programs you could try. If the first attempt with a data recover program fails, don't keep trying to recover the data, as further attempts could cause damage, depending on the problem with the hard drive.
If you can't recover your data with any of these methods, they you should probably take the hard drive to a professional data recovery outfit. It will likely cost a minimum of $300.
If you have to replace your hard drive, get an SSD -- it will be significantly faster.
Also, get a large (4TB) hard drive (external or internal) to use as a backup. Run a back-up at least once every week.
And if you haven't made a live CD/DVD or live USB, do so! They are so easy to make, and the live OS is free! It is exceedingly helpful to be able to boot and do things on your computer when your installed OS brain farts or when there is a hard drive problem.

I would think a loose cable on a desk top PC would be pretty rare, what could make it come loose?

FWIW, I've a Dell Optiplex 980.
Yesterday, in preparation for some electrical work to my home, unplugged the power from back of computer (after powering down).
Went to restart and wouldn't start or boot.
After a bunch of tinkering, replaced the power cable with another and computer works fine.

If anyone has ever worked with electronics, stuff that worked yesterday somehow stops working if you move stuff, change something, move to a new location, bump it, blow out the dust, just look at it wrong, etc. Had a good laser printer go out because of a power outage, just had a microwave go out after leaving it unplugged for a while (after years plugged in) and would not power on . What you call a good reason to replace.
Same with a light bulb you leave on and never turn off , and it works a lot longer than if you turn it on and off. All sorts of reasons.
And cables do get loose for no obvious reason or oxidize and work after you unplug them and put them on again.... There are reasons there are steps for troubleshooting.

It might not have been fully seated when it was originally connected.

Don't fear Big Red.......
removing a hard drive is not difficult
a couple of ribbons and a few screws.....
After removing it a cheap plug in adaptor can get all the info you
need off the hard drive...
As for the Optiplex....a new SSD can bring it back to life with a new Windows install
All this can be learned on You Tube.....not that hard
