Old guy advice:
Don't follow any "system"
Don't buy picks or tip sheets
Don't rely on anyone to do your handicapping for you.
Do follow ONE circuit (at least in the beginning). A circuit is New York or Cali or Florida etc etc....you will see the same trainers and horses moving from track to track within that circuit each year. Through this familiarity you will soon begin to notice the way certain trainers or jockeys operate. You will already know many of the horses after following them for a year or two.
Watch as many races as you possibly can from that circuit. Take simple notes on those races...such as, what was the running style of the top three finishers?
Trying to play Gulfstream, Aqueduct, and Laurel at the same time will drain your brain and wallet.
Take your time...use the 25mins between races to your advantage.
Bet ONLY on races where you feel you have an edge
Best of luck to you kid!

I remember in the 80's back when the programs were just a little booklet and
you had to buy a form to get the pp's every booklet contained a system. This
was at Penn National and I remember one where you added all the speed
figures of the entered horses last 2 races divided by the entries in the race
and only looked at the ones above the average. That's all I remember but
whatever the remaining rules were it won 4 races that night. I could have
gone back 20 times and maybe not hit a race but systems are just that one
way of picking horses . Penn National was famous for putting there sheets out
with 2 or 3 races left on the card. They would put them on a table on the
second deck you could smell the mimeograph odor. When I speak to old timers
now everybody remembers going to the 2nd deck and getting high on the
newly printed sheets. Back then they sold Mikes Pink Card, Jacks Little Green
Sheet, AD_TAB, Hersheys Gold Sheet, and one more I can't remember .
But on the 2nd deck they all had 3 winners even if you had the same card
they just " rearranged their faces and gave them all another name." quote from
Bob Dylan

Cool story. I guess if penn National had “real winners” they would be a good quality track!

Penn National blew it so big back when Racing Alive was on and you could
bet from home. They were actually covered on the Vegas board but with
some cheating, jockey death , drugging, etc. they were taken off . Fred
Lipkin and John Bogar ( who is still calling the races there ) were pioneers
in the telecasting of live races. They used to have a show and in between
races would handicap the next race etc. I was new to the horse racing business
and I did a lot of listening and learning right from the lounge chair in my own
home. When the Lehigh Valley Downs first opened ( simulcast from Penn Nat)
you couldn't find a seat on a Saturday night . The place was packed. A lot
of Lehigh Valley people would make the trip on the weekend to Penn but then
as they got older they moved to Lehigh Valley. Now if you go there on a Sat
night you might get one half of half the building with a few seats occupied.
Its a shame but once the Sands casino opened many of the remaining horse
crowd migrated there and if sports betting is allowed at the Sands the Lehigh
Valley downs will go belly up.

Good, embrace that. But remember, everyone is "different". Be yourself, and that's it.

The fact you took the three words I wrote about chasing girls and doing well in school and got offended rather than reading the paragraph I wrote about what you should do to learn handicapping speaks volumes.

No offense, but you get _______. <insert your own adjective there that is similar to "offended"> Reread some of your posts and you might see what some people are referring to. BTW, castaway pretty much nailed it with his last post.

POT actually did give some great advice. Learn a circuit. Note which jocks get out clean from the gate, which ones hold back, which ones can finish well (strong near the wire). What do trainers / owners excel with...etc etc etc...If you watch too many tracks you'll never have a clue. The human element to racing is huge.
If you're looking for a tip sheet , which I don't advise, get a subscription to timeform and enjoy their product. Their top three choices for tracks with large fields hit at prices, and the overall product CJ and crew put together is awesome... But I can't emphasize enough that POTs advise is best. Learn a circuit. Gain knowledge that you can piece together for yourself, a lot of moving parts to analyzing and handicapping each race. It takes time.
Most importantly, be selective. I've never seen a track where you'll consistently find three or more good bets per card. And good bets are all you want...Bet wisely, no one has a gun to your head when it comes to betting. If you find yourself betting three or more races per card it's just my opinion you need to step away. The tiger eats you in the end. Be selective and you can actually make some money, even nowadays.
