Not much different than racinos not cutting take ever. No foresight, just a money grab.

Good ten tweet thread from a Clemson economist on the Keeneland takeout hike, and measuring the handle.

Will be interesting to see how KEE finishes up and more interesting to see how the execs spin it at the end of the meet.

What do you guys think is the most achievable [lowered] track take currently at a large track? It really is hard to appeal to "increased capital costs", which is a legit point I think otherwise ... but not when you increase take and the handle goes down.
Just to take a stab, I think the game would be at least a push even if it lowered the take to 10% min, 15% max for all wagers. It might get increased enough handle to do that much better. At this point it the country/culture, I do wonder how many would be attracted to the game at these far more reasonable prices, if they were in fact offered.

a lower takeout and elimination of rebates along with lowering of purses would go a long way for a good first step to put racing back on track in North America.

One question, if the goal was to raise money for purses why did Kee lower their pick 5 rate so substantially?

I think they probably feel that they can raise takeout, lower the takeout in one pool (loss leader), and that most horseplayers probably will not notice or care. Remember their perception is that the public doesn't care about takeout. They feel by throwing the public a bone with a lower pick 5 takeout, it frees up their ability to raise takeout. They probably feel that the majority of horse players will condser it a net gain.
Long term growth doesn't seem to be on the agenda of the racing industry. Until it is, this is what we get. Thus the need to boycott. We have to make the short term results (net revenue negative) so takeout increases are no longer an option. Hardly going to fix racing, but every takeout increase is going amplify the long term downward spiral.

Great way to get you to make other bets. If you spend substantial time handicapping 5 races it would be very hard to just stick with the P-5. Especially if you are knocked out early but feel that you had some very strong picks late.

I asked kind of rhetorically...I believe they did it as 19% is not competitive with the "A" tracks.
essentially, it sounds like keeneland did not raise take because they needed to but did it because they could, because thats what other A tracks are set at, same as the pick 5, they went down to match what others are doing.
