The Steve Coburn Rant

The point system and fresh horses competing against weary horses in
the first two legs of the Triple Crown is an issue which was known to
all trainers and owners, including the DAP team.

The blast leveled on national Television as a result of CC's loss
was obviously made by a frustrated owner, somehow thinking CC
should have beaten his previous competitors based on HIS perception of a
level playing field.

CC lost this race based upon the rigors of racing
on three tracks at different distances and surfaces in a five week
period, which is the atypical schedule for 3 year olds other than
racing in this event.

At the end of the day, the post placed Victor in a no win position. Going
to the lead , opening up and losing to one of the closers as against
the usual stalking approach would create open hostility from
all parties who would blame the jockey, not the horse for losing
the triple crown.

Long story short, the same result could have evolved with
CC racing against his former opponents, as he appeared to
have little energy through the middle part of this race.

It will be interesting to see if CC goes to the Breeders Cup this
year, and if DAP elects to sell an interest in CC.

The rant was ridiculous but apparently California grabbed himself leaving the gate. That could have cost him the race, not the competition.
Here is a picture of his affected foot heading towards the barn after the race

There is a DRF story about it

Espinoza lost his place like a fool.
He 'd have to hail a rocket to make it from four wide.
If close to the rail could CC pierce through the opposition ?
That's an imponderable but overall he did not have the measure of the field in this race. The 4/5 price was the result of overhype.

oburn called Tonalist's connections "cowards" on NBC shortly after the race, and he continued the assault to anyone who asked him a question. The feel-good story of the spring ended with a finger-jabbing fusillade of profanity.

"They're a bunch of goddamn cheaters," Coburn told Yahoo Sports. "If your horse doesn't even have the points to run in the Kentucky Derby, he shouldn't be able to run in the Triple Crown. They're goddamn cheaters."

The biggest irony of this discussion is that years ago handicappers and trainers believed you could NOT will the Belmont off a 5 week layoff by skipping the Preakness. The thought was that the horse would not be fit enough to run 1 1/2 miles off 5 weeks. Then Bobby Frankel did it with Empire Maker (my memory might be off on who did it first in recent years) and it became the opposite. Now everyone believes that skipping the Belmont and going in fresh is an advantage.

The Peter Pan has long been a path for late developers to take a shot at Derby/Preakness winners. Coastal beat Spectacular Bid as a fresh peaking horses coming out of the PP.

He's right but that's what tc is all about - defeat the unscrupulous court challengers.

You find out more about people in adversity then when things go well. That seems to be the case here. His wife tried bailing him out yesterday, he just shooed her away and ranted on. At least the trainer has showed some class. I feel cheaper for liking these guys. Coburn bought into all the hype. He thought he had the best mousetrap. Win with class, lose with more. Shame, great run, classless ending. I would also recommend no drinking before interviews.

His wife tried hard to get him to stop. I told my husband I'd have kicked him in the back of his knee so he'd collapse if he was spouting off like that on national tv lol. I wonder what his partner thinks?
