Mel Stute RIP

He was a very skilled trainer. His most famous horse was Snow Chief, who won the Preakness and a whole bunch of other stakes races in 1986 and 1987, but his best training job might have been Very Subtle, who trounced the heavy favorite Groovy in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. She was pure speed:

RIP

Was a very reliable trainer. I have never met him but know he was very well liked along with being respected.

RIP Mel.

About 10 to 12 yrs ago I was down in LA for work. Ditched out early for the day & got a box @ Hollywood. (my Dad drove up from San Diego for the day)
Mel was a row up from us & had a maiden score that day. If I remember correctly (I often don't) it was fairly high odds. I think everybody at Hollywood stopped by & congratulated Mel.

we used to send him our babies to train in California. he had MALIBU MOON for B. Wayne Hughes. i saw him at the yearling sale at Timonium buying the first crop of MALIBU MOON'S foals. he bought a grade 1 stake winner in PERFECT MOON at that sale for under $5000.

god bless him and his family.

RIP Mel Stute. Your name is memorialized in the movie Let it Ride by Trevor Denman in the overhead announcements in a clubhouse scene.

Also memorialized by one of the oldest barns at Oaklawn, with the name Snow Chief plated on the side! (old map)

Won the BC Sprint off a big layoff --less common then-- following her win in the Test Stakes at Saratoga.

RIP
