I was going through some pedigrees at random and I looked up Spanish Riddle. I had no clue that he was one of the first horse to have successful amputative surgery after he broke down in the slop at Saratoga in 1973.
I forgot his name and was trying to remember it after I learned this but the name escaped me. I knew the name had an I in it and he was a sprinter but couldn't think of it. I went through In Excess and Intentionally but nothing.
I was at work and when I was closing down the restaurant one of the employees asked "You got in at 5 today?" That triggered it and I thought "5" "5/8" "Spanish Riddle ran in a 5/8 mile race the day Secretariat went the opening 5/8 in the Belmont in 58 1/5" This is how you know when you think about horse racing too much. lol
Spanish Riddle was one of the lucky ones when it comes to break downs.

I've never heard of successful surgery involving amputations on a racehorse, could you explain more on this case? Is this something that ever caught on?

Held the track record for 6f at The Spa (1:08) forever....Still does...Tied with Speightstown.
Wow that was really interesting, thanks for sharing. With that sort of success on such an awful sounding injury I wonder why that technique seems to have gone by the wayside.
