I think the shutdown is great. If Trump didn't stand up for the wall, the Democrats would realize they could ignore him on anything.

If he was negotiating from a position of strength he would offer the Democrats something in exchange for his money. He can't because he doesn't have the capital to do that. He would be viewed as being weak and caving by giving them something they want in exchange.
Today was him showing he's pissed off because his hostage taking plan isn't moving them at all.
