Interesting 'Angle'?

I found this link to a horse racing study from a few years back...

https://teddykoker.com/2019/12/beati...-horse-racing/

This is absoutley the first time I have ever seen the ACTUAL WEIGHT of a horse used as a betting factor/angle.

Is this an actual thing? Or is it just ridiculous? Thanks.

A couple of decades ago RP used to weigh the horses.

It was a very interesting statistic - one that would be huge for condition analysis. (Especially for long lay off horses.)

My understanding was that the trainers screamed and the scales were removed.

What a coincidence.

I think it would be very useful information... for wagering.

A few tracks give out this info, though from what I've experienced sometimes it's only on-track and doesn't make TVG.

I feel like I've still been seeing weights at Remington - at least in these last couple of years.

Believe it or not several years ago Remington Park track management decided to once again gather weight of horse data and display it to horseplayers on their track video.

Shortly afterwards The Stronach Group began doing the same at Portland Meadows. Not long after that The Stronach Group also started doing it at Laurel, Golden Gate, Santa Anita, and Gulfstream. I don't recall exactly when, but Lone Star Park has been doing it too for the past few years.

Just an Fyi...

At my urging, HDW has been including weight of horse (when available) in their F.TXT chart files since January, 2019.

Imo, it can be a useful data point. I wish every North American track would disseminate weight of horse data.

I had no idea.

Please convince The Jockey Club to get all tracks to gather such data.

I also think that might be useful information for trying to determine current condition. That was a pretty standard piece of information in dog racing (at least at the track I attended). It might just be a big pain in the butt to weigh all the horses regularly.

Weighing horses before registered workouts could be one way to provide that info while still giving trainers the option to hide it.

Depends on the track. At some tracks horses (including the ones stabled at that track) come to a receiving/in-today barn for a period of time prior to going to the paddock for their race, rather than coming straight from their stalls. They can be weighed as they come into that barn.
