top gun: maverick...more than fancy flying?
surprised not to see a thread about this?
i'm not exactly gene siskel, but i'll start.
while not exactly godfather 2, overall i thought it was pretty good as far as sequels go and i look forward to seeing it again in the future.
it was maybe a little predictable and seemed to borrow heavily from eastwood's heartbreak ridge imo.
like eastwood's gunny highway, cruise's maverick has skills and talent that are invaluable to the military while at the same time being the kind of guy who hampers his career advancement by taking nearly as many steps back as he takes forward. also like heartbreak ridge there is seemingly unfinished romantic business with a local bar worker while our hero returns to town to train younger forces for an important mission.
a nice touch in the movie is the return of iceman who, in declining health, holds on to his work to try and show his friend what seems to be a major theme of the movie: letting go.
grade: 8/10
let's hear more!!!
