Have "run up distances" made speed figs worthless?
About a year ago I saw this in an Equibase program for the first time....listed in number of feet. No one says much about it, but in races decided by inches it would seem this is important.

There have always been run-ups, so if speed figures were not worthless before, they are not worthless now because nothing has changed...

Yep, and now that they are published (usually accurately) it is easier to account for them.

Guys do you know, are there run up distances in Hong-Kong? If there are, what are they?

Pretty sure run ups are not used.

One of those things that make me want to give up handicapping...Seems simple to fix; but we all know what that means to the racing industry.

Not worthless, but there are times when a horse beats the gate and stops abruptly, this will affect the final time and even fractional times by a few fifths, especially distances such as 1mile races at Santa Anita or any other race that has a particularly long runup. A figure maker who watches tape diligently can compensate for this.

This is one of the big things I mention in the article, Bayern's Travers was a good example.

I don't have any run up issues making figures for mule racing. The run up is zero. Unfortunately, they have so many screw ups timing the races electronically a lot of therm are hand timed.

I read most of what was deleted in this thread last night.... How anyone can actually believe that run up distances ( that vary from track to track and in other ways) does not affect final times is beyond me. But anything can happen... Hey after all these years Major League Baseball finally began instant reply... It's not perfect, but wow it IS BETTER! So I can hold out hope that Racing may change this for the better and the BETTOR.... No laughing here...
