Different finish lines at the track

So I know Fair Grounds has a different finish line for some races. Does any other track do that? And if so, why?

Also, my dad was telling me that at one point, Hollywood Park had so many different finish lines that it was getting confusing for the jockeys. Apparently many stood up too early when in fact the race wasn't over yet. Anyone remember or have any good stories about this?

Arlington, if I remember right.

Why? To race at popular distances. In Arlington's case that would be 1 1/16 miles.

I don't think LRC uses an alternate finish line.

Their website says they have a second finish line 330 feet past the first finish line

Interesting, never really noticed. I'll check out some replays and see what I can find.

Thanks, I didn't think so. I was trying to imagine a distance that would require this and couldn't think of one on that layout.

They have a second one that is 1 inch before the real one. They use it for races I bet on.

Keeneland's main track is 1 1/16 mile in circumference.

Starting at the regular (second) finish line allows for only 253 feet to the first turn, disadvantageous for horses on the outside, so (with exception of the Breeders' Cup Mile) it isn't used for the start.

Starting at the first finish line gives the field extra distance to the turn so it's fairer for horses on the outside, but the race has to end there too because of the circumference of the track.

When they ran the Breeders' Cup Mile they used the regular finish line but the gate was set back 70 yards so the horses had 463 feet to the first turn.
