interesting baseball move that might have been

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...seball-history

quote: Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor 80 years ago not only ensured the United States’ entry into the second world war. It inadvertently but categorically changed baseball history.

One day after the attack, Major League Baseball’s owners were expected to approve the move of the American League’s St Louis Browns to Los Angeles for 1942 – 16 years before Walter O’Malley’s former Brooklyn Dodgers played their first season on the West Coast. The Browns felt so confident that they even scheduled a press conference in Los Angeles to announce the move on the afternoon of Monday 8 December 1941.

Even with Breadon’s and Wrigley’s support, Barnes had to solve the problem of transcontinental travel at a time when railways predominated and air travel was primitive.

Team presidents “were concerned over the safety of their players should the shift of the Browns to Los Angeles require their clubs to make trips out there by air,” Barnes told the Sporting News in 1949.

After consulting with Trans World Airlines (TWA) and the Santa Fe railroad, which operated a route between Los Angeles and Chicago, the Browns devised a schedule allowing for two transcontinental trips by rail and one by air, with enough off days to make travel viable. The Browns would partially compensate other clubs’ travel

Baseball Annual salary 1870s-1890s: Between $2k to $5k
Baseball Annual salary 1900s-1920s: Between $9k to $20k
Baseball Annual salary 1930s-1950s: Between $30k to $100k
Baseball Annual salary 1960s-1980s: Between $80k and up to $1 million
Baseball Annual salary 1990s-2010s: Between $3 million to $33 million
Baseball Annual salary now: Low as $900k to $38 million

All in it for the money for this era no matter where you are playing as long as you have a nice contract that's all that matters now

Have seen my local club (Blue Jays) sign great players throughout the year and the worst thing about is that these players are wanting big named contracts in order to stay with the team

For example, Robbie Ray signed a 1 year $8 million contract with the Blue Jays last year and went on to win the Cy Young Award for us; now we tried to give him a 1 year $18.4 million extension but he declined it and went to Seattle for a 5 year $115 million dollar contract ($23 million per year)

Sorry Robbie I guess we should have given you 4.6 million more (18.4+4.6= 23) in order for you to stay another year

I could give more examples but I already sound like a bum anyways with this so I will leave it at this

37 year old Max Sherzer just signed a 3 year 130 million dollar contract with the Mets. That is over a million dollars a start.

I'm old enough to remember when Pete Rose claimed to be the "first $100,000 singles hitter.'

Again another "just in for the money" player

He also got 4 Excelsior tickets for EVERY game with his 3 year contract....
every game , not just his scheduled starts

valued about 1/2 million

I doubt that his family is coming from Florida to watch every game he pitches

But he had to have them....
