Who Am I?

HE CAME UP WITH THE SOX DURING THE WAR;
A BRIDGE EXPERT...HE COULDN’T KEEP SCORE.

HE’D BAT THREE-THIRTEEN IN THE PENNANT YEAR;
NOT MUCH POWER…BUT SOMETHING TO CHEER.

HE HAD A STRONG ARM…TURNED IN DOUBLE PLAYS;
YET YOU WOULDN’T COMPARE HIM TO WILLIE MAYS.

ONE OF HIS FINGERS…IT WAS MASHED;
CRUSHED BY A BALL DiMAGGIO SMASHED.

AGAINST THE REDBIRDS HE’D FILL IN FOR DOM;
“COUNTRY” RACED HOME…IT WAS FAR FROM CALM.

HE’D FINISH UP HIS CAREER WITH THE NATS;
HIS PLAYING-TIME LIMITED…FEW AT-BATS.

He's not the guy that held on to the ball when Slaughter scored from first, was he?

Johnny Pesky. Pesky took the throw from Culberson. Slaughter went through "the stop sign" at third.
