Tiger Double Down to Win the Grand Slam?

In case you haven't heard, a man from Wisconsin wagered $85K on Tiger Woods to win The Masters.

Obviously that happened.

He flew down to Las Vegas Wednesday to cash his ticket.

He not only cashed his ticket, he laid another $100K down on Tiger winning something that has never been done before. Not even by him or Jack Nicklaus. The Grand Slam in a single year.

The payoff?

$10 Million if it happens.

I love this man.

That's crazy. (or is it?)

It's like saying a 65-1 shot will win the Kentucky Derby after a disqualification of the horse who crossed the wire first.

Realistically Tiger should be no better than 10-1 to win any of the last 3 majors. He is listed at 8-1 to win the PGA which I think reflects a popularity premium.

He is getting hosed for taking the bet at 99-1. It should be more in the range of 1000-1.

Ha.

Never said it was a good bet. And like you illustrated, it is quite a horrible wager.

However, the dude made $1.15 Million on Tiger in The Masters. He then doubled down on the craziness of his original wager that he cashed. I think he kind of felt he "owed" Tiger that wager.

I think it is great. And a great story regardless of the logic of the wager or the *ahem* poor nature of the wagerer per Thaskalos. (That Thask guy is only out to ruin all the fun for the rest of us. )

It does add a little spice to the upcoming tournaments.

It seems to me that this is more of a "look at me" type bet than something done by a rational bettor. It's a no lose situation for someone seeking attention. If he wins he is becomes a media darling and if he loses he is lauded for having the cajones for making the bets.

He didn't "look at me" wager his original $85K. That came out of the book in Vegas. They love that kind of press, especially on somebody like Tiger.

It was even greater news for them when the guy cashed and reloaded on Tiger in an even more ridiculous bet

It says they take big bets, and they pay.

Is there something a little odd about somebody making their first sports bet an $85,000 wager? On a longshot to boot.

Of course after claiming it was his first sports bet he then makes the following "Those who are saying I'm an idiot for not just placing the bet on the PGA don't understand how sportsbooks calculate risk, and they'd never allow me to place so much money down on a bet down the road for millions of dollars."

For someone to have a complete understanding of how a sportsbook calculates risk after making only one bet is remarkable.
