Handle Drops Significantly in Santa Anita Opener. Was it the unofficial boycott?
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/th...-anita-opener/
Excerpt:
Was this due to the poor weather on the East Coast, the uncertainty of a newly installed dirt surface or did the horesplayers boycott have the desired effect?

I got my calendar then left. I played golf instead. It was great, walked on without a tee time reservation and hardly any one else on course, so, IOW, golf is hurting too.

I did not even get a calendar since I did not go to Santa Anita, but rather otb. Some otbs gave them out, but not Los Alamitos. The cheapskates quit givng them a couple of years ago, said that they could not afford it. Guess that the mutual takeout hike for them is not working out so good for them either.

I slept on this last night, I think it's a 4th option.. yes, I think the boycott has more effect, than people will give credit for. I think people however have simply become, what is the word I'm looking for, apathetic, towards the racing and it's going to tkae more than a surface switch to get them back, long term. handicappers are dived into new cards, new tracks, new circuits, and Socal hasn't done enough to gain it's interest back.
horse racing is alot like taxes, I would venture 5% of the racing public, wagers about 25-40% of the wagering handle. The dude that spoke last week was half right when he said, only the top 1% cares about takeout. however, that's the percent, you don't want to piss off because they control alot of the handle.
The avg guy CHOOSES between, tampa and Santa Lanita, between turf paradise and santa anita, hawthorne and santa anita, the big a and santa anita, oaklwan and santa anita. right now, santa anita, is not winning that battle. It's that simple imho
without the pie getting bigger, for handle to go UP, someone elses handle has to go DOWN. They aren't going to take handle away from those tracks I mentioned, not doing the things they are now.

I played yesterday but not SA. Stayed with Tampa and Calder all day. (Way too chalky at both places.)
Anyway, my boycott started yesterday. Could be the first time I was early in my life.

Santa Anita Opener: Inside the numbers Paulick Report
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ra...e-the-numbers/
Paulick put up his own poll on the front page. He added an "all of the above" and I should have done that as well.

How come 49 minutes after the first race was run the full chart isn't available? Was the race delayed?

Did anyone read this articular lately about recent purse cuts at Calder?
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...pain-at-calder
I'm not surprised about the parimutuel decline there. Maybe there is an unofficial boycott at Calder by wise bettors, because of some of the high takeout rates. The naive racing executives at Calder must think most horse players didn't notice or don't care about the 27 % takeouts on their triactors, superfectas, pick 3's and pick 4's....HELLO! To Calder executives...Wake up! You're underestimating the intelligence and know-how of today's informed horse players. We're reading the H.A.N.A. takeout charts you know. You'd be wise to follow the example of TAMPA BAY DOWNS, at lowering track takeout in several areas. Better still, why not try the HIALEAH PARK experiment at
12 % takeout across the board?
Of course the Calder spin doctors are blaming the usual things like the economy etc. They figure that slot machine revenue will save the day. Even some casinos are going bankrupt in the USA. To the Calder executies.. Do a Google search on that topic. In my opinion, the economy has some effect on declining casino revenues, but so do some other factors. Perhaps in this information age, people in general are becoming more well-informed about even casino games. That is they are becoming aware that casino games are programmed for regular players to lose in the long run! Dumb people, average-intelligence people, even smart people gamble on casino games. I would say though...WISE PEOPLE SHOULDN'T GAMBLE ON CASINO GAMES, because of knowing what the outcome will be for them in the long run.

This yr's first race had 9 betting interests, while last yr's had 6 (second day of the meet) and 10 (first Monday).
