Handicapping contest starts Friday

As announced in various other threads, a new handicapping contest is under way. It starts next Friday and is open to anyone brave enough to share his or her selections with us on a weekly basis. (After discussing with a fellow contestant) here are the rules of the contest:

1) The contest starts on Friday, October 1.
2) The contest runs for 6 weeks.
3) Each week, the contestant has to provide ten $2 WIN or PLACE bets on two of the following days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Regardless of whether you choose Friday-Saturday, Friday-Sunday or Saturday-Sunday, it has to be 10 selections per day and 20 per weekend.
4) You may specify one backup choice for each selection. If your original selection gets scratched, your back-up choice becomes your new selection. If both horses get scratched, or your horse gets scratched and you didn't provide a back-up, the official favourite becomes your selection. If there are two or more favourites, the favourite with the highest saddle cloth number becomes your selection.
5) During week 6, you are only allowed 10 bets, and they all have to be on Breeders Cup races. The stakes are doubled to $4.

When the contest is over, each contestant will have made 110 selections, and will have 'bet' $240 dollars in total (5*20*2 + 10*4). The person with the highest balance wins. There is no prize, just bragging rights.

The results will be made official once the Breeders Cup Classic has been run on Saturday, November 6.

A few people have already agreed to participate - I hope that others will join the contest as well.

Did you actually mean WIN or PLACE, or is it WIN and PLACE? Just one or the other, or BOTH type of bets?

I had wondered the same thing at first but given the $240 total it looks like it's WIN or PLACE. $40 every weekend for 5 weeks then $40 for BC weekend.

I'd like to play but.....

With plenty of other commitments each weekend - family, racing, etc. - it is difficult to put time and effort into a contest for mere bragging rights.

That being said, I do play in a weekly racing fantasy league on another site.
There are no significant prizes on offer there, so playing for free is not the issue.

The problem I have is making 10 selections on each occasion. Why not 5?
For me, 10 takes too long to put together, plus once you get past your top 5 picks, they tend to dilute in effectiveness. JMO

That's fine with me ... if nobody objects, 5 a day it is.

That would be great!
See what the consensus is....it makes it easier to score, also.
Including a greater number (perhaps all) of the BC races is in order.

Ok, thanks. Sounds fair. So are you going to post how many races per day will be used for the contest before the end of the week, or has a final decision been made already (5 or 10)?

Was the 5 race a day decision okay with the others you were planning this with?
