Was there any DHS data on how many illegals entered the US and were not sent back? Is it not true that far fewer illegals are crossing into the US these days? So the number of removals doesn't really mean much as a stand alone stat.

Yes, that is true. The number peaked in 2000 and has seen an annual decline ever since, especially when the recession hit.
