I enjoyed listening to all these guys. Used to tune into Turfway every evening they ran to listen to Mike Battaglia call a race. To each their own
Happy to be included in that list. The others all brought something different and special to the table.

I pretty much just screamed but was lucky to scream some names that allowed others to like the call despite me.

He's improved, but my point was more that he started very bad but got time to develop, which Jessica didn't for some reason (at least not from the horseplayer). I hate his canned, "I have to say this every race" stuff, but I know most announcers have those sayings.

I only had one "canned" phrase.

Straight & Strong

I tried to be very selective when I used it.

Doubt it was more than maybe 50-75 times throughout my career.

Some liked it. Some hated it. Welcome to my world.

Jessica's is "picking up some pieces", quite often. I'm rooting for her , but right now it's the kid at recital vibes.

Thanks Vic! I was Googling Buchwald, I will probably be asking again in a year,
we have a lot of the same memories and are the same age, but I am sure I have been hit in the head a lot more than you have. I always wonder why Alan did not get a long steady gig at a major track. He was behind the mic at Hollywood between Harry Henson and you, correct?

How many times did you use it on a horse who was being hard ridden turning for home, while the jockey on the nearest pursuer had not even went to the whip yet? I will guess never.

Of course a track announcer has to cover the whole field, as a bettor we are probably just paying attention to the front runners and who we have on our tickets. Tough job from my opinion. Jessica has obviously improved a ton,
and I am probably different than most men, I don't cut women any slack, especially the attractive ones.

Didn't some one say the saying the EVD announcer says at the start is required for the job? What is it again?

As long as I am asking, who called Hollywood Park Harness in the late 70's and Los Alamitos QH at the same time? The Los Al guy was the first track announcer I heard in person at 14. I run automatic metal cutting equipment in my business, from time to time when I hit the start button I will yell "They're
running" in memory of that Los Al announcer. Fortunately I now work alone and the nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away, oops 2 furlongs, or I am sure I would get a visit from mental health authorities.
