THE LAST GOLD

It's not a movie, it's a documentary...and I watched it last night on Amazon Prime. It's the story of the 1976 USA Women's Olympic swimming team, led by Shirley Babashoff...and their quest for gold in Montreal against the doped-up women swimmers from East Germany. The ending was so awe-inspiring that even a cynical, grizzled horseplayer like me was left with tears in his eyes. Too bad I wasn't old enough to fully appreciate this when it really happened.

I may never go to a live movie theater again. I certainly will not go until after we have a vaccine and I've been inoculated. Until then I'll wait for the Blu-ray or for Netflix to stream it.

I'd like to see Lynch's cut of Dune which was six hours long. The studio's cut (two hours) butchered it and added additional footage not shot by Lynch. There's supposed to be a three hour cut directed by Alan Smithee.

Joseph Mankiewicz's cut of Cleopatra was also six hours long. He wanted it released as two separate pictures: Caesar and Cleopatra and Antony and Cleopatra, the first to be released in the summer and the second at Christmas. Studio head Darryl F. Zanuck thought the Burton-Taylor romance would fizzle by Christmas losing publicity for the film. Burton's part in the first half is small so Zanuck ordered a three hour cut. When Elizabeth Taylor saw the three hour cut at the world premier she went to the lady's room at intermission, vomited, and left the theater. The DVD cut is four hours long.

I'd love to see the six hour cut of Cleopatra but I doubt that it survives. Ditto the six hour cut of Lynch's Dune.

The Sci Fi channel produced a mini-series of Dune about 20 years ago. I have not seen it but it reportedly is pretty good. It's five hours long.

Roku TV YTTV app now supports linked Movies Anywhere accounts. It shows up in the Library section under PURCHASED at the bottom of the left side bar. Good to see thia rolling out to more Roku devices.

Except in real life, he never would have been able to get anywhere near a synagogue dressed like that...but still...that scene was DEFINITELY staged...

Sorry to see the Holocaust survivor had passed away (tribute at end).

Recently watched The Friends of Eddie Coyle from 1973 which I hadn't seen in long, long time. Mitchum's performance as a hardened but beleaguered low-level Boston gangster facing time and tired of the grind is spot on perfect. I've since re-watched it a couple more times. Great flick, all filmed on location in Boston and surrounding area, very gritty feel to it, Peter Boyle also very good plus some other very familiar faces like guy who played Moe Greene in The Godfather.

Was surprised that Mitchum did not receive an Oscar nomination, but 1973 was a tough year for best actor competition with Jack Lemmon in Save the Tiger (winner), Pacino in Serpico, Jack in The Last Detail, Redford in The Sting and Brando in Last Tango in Paris, but Mitchum deserved better and definitely should have been nominated over Brando, in my opinion, but Tango was a groundbreaking box-office smash and Friends of Eddie Coyle was a bit of a sleeper.

Check it out, excellent movie, the kind they don't make anymore

I agree. Tango was soft core porn. I did not care for it at all.

But then IMHO the Oscars are something of a joke. Talent has little to do with it. It's a popularity contest. Anyone who does not live in southern California and go the their parties doesn't stand much of a chance.

Agree, Last Tango was garbage.

Just watched another good film, a true-crime British movie from 1970 that I'd never heard of . . . 10 Rillington Place, starring Richard Attenborough in an eerie performance as a creepy real-life serial killer who lured women to their fate as a quasi-medical healer in the 1940's and 50's and a young John Hurt as an unwitting neighbor. Very good movie.

I recently saw Rollerball (1975) again. I am surprised how many futuristic things they got correct.

I went to a movie theater yesterday the first time in 9-10 months and saw Tenet. It was difficult to follow and similar to Inception. It was an AMC in Washington state and now Insley has 'allowed' them to open. This theater is now Friday-Sunday and I got the first show yesterday and only 2 of us watching this showing.
