As far as Nevada goes, I have made hundreds, or thousands, of bets through ADWs online there. Never a problem.
Legal online bookmakers in Europe track IP addresses through their software.
They will not do business with U.S. residents, and I believe that their customers run into problems if visiting here and try to place a wager through their existing account. I don't know if they can get around that, or not.
U.S. ADWs could, obviously, have similar software if they cared to.
As of now, this is not the case.

I've often wondered about how bettors using laptops and may be traveling in a non wagering state can still use their accounts.
It has been my assumption that ADW's have IP Address detection capability.
After all, how else could they be in compliance with state's laws?

Several years ago I was in Vegas and used my 4njbets account, I just put that I was in Jersey and had no problems.
Recently, New Jersey got online casino/poker. They use a system to check that your ip is in the state. You have to have wifi. I guess they use some sort of GPS within the ip address to know you are in the state to avoid proxies, I guess.

I travel a LOT. I requested clarification from my online betting service about wagering online during travel. The criteria is the state of residence, NOT the physical location. I am more than a little cautious about such matters, because in one of the states I visit, it is a felony for residents to wager online. The clarification I requested involved visits to Nevada (fairly frequent), among others. No one has ever suggested that physical location had anything to do with it.
In fact, I was unable to wager online from my current location for an extended period--until I changed my residency (including driver's license, blah blah blah).

Hmm. I'll rephrase....Was it an address that is not your primary residence?
I am asking because I reside in one these non betting states. I hate using an offshore ADW. I's like to see if there is a workaround.
For example. I could use my parent's address in FL..
But don't ADW's use the credit reporting companies to identify a person's true residence?
Do ADW's request a copy of driver's license or ask for the state of license and DL number?

Corporate CYA requires it. Using someone else's address is NOT a good idea.

The ADWs are supposed to confirm that you are in the State you say you are. This is easily done by checking your IP address. Whether they do or not, well, you'd have to ask them. It is illegal for them to accept wagers from a State that does not allow pari-mutuel wagering.

FYI, next to the log in button for TVG is a sentence "By entering this site I certify, that I am currently located in the state selected above."
Hope this helps.

Some ADWs accept LLCs. You can register an LLC in a state that is different from where you live and that allows gambling.

It is pretty trivial to route your traffic through an IP address at a different location, including from Europe or where ever. And there is good reason to do that just for basic security when using public wi-fi anywhere, even near your home. So IP checking doesn't prove anything, is fairly useless, and will also block legitimate users that are in non-prohibited locations.
