5 Million Pounds

No , thats not the amount of manure carted away during the Saratoga meet.

Seems the bookmakers over in merry old England got hammered for 5 million pounds (1.3 times that for dollars) when a trainer just happened to have 3 no hopers show up on the same card with plenty of newly found form.

Bookies offered the trio at over 4000 -1 and while they all took massive dives in the per race betting, they pay off on those early bets at fixed odds.

No one makes that kind of money here in the states on betting coups.

its impossible to get down for any type of money that is not parimutuel these days. but you can bet a place like Saratoga on a big day like Whitney or Travers and bet into $500,000 win pools. other than big days it makes zero sense to bet big. Hong Kong has $10 million win pools, but getting a winner there is next to impossible.

Won't be all that surprised to watch a Masterpiece Mystery episode next year based on this event, starting off with the trainer and/or jockey floating face down in the Thames....

The bookmakers claim they lost a bundle. Are they lying?
For reference 1000 X 4000 is 4 Million.

So if you think a few hundred dollar bet would be impossible to get down, you're probably wrong.

As for Hong Kong, they have some of the most formful racing in the world there, and favorites win at the normal rate, so at least for some, getting a winner is not impossible.
