Calling the races at PRX

She's getting much better. It was awful rough there for awhile. I'm glad they stuck with her though. It's refreshing and kind of novel to have a gal call the races. Glad that she's making strides and getting better as the weeks move on.

I haven't listened in a while. I went to watch today and the first race I heard was good. But it was only four horses and a merry-go-round race so not going to go overboard. I checked out one more and I have to say she is much, much improved since I last really gave a listen. I only heard a slight bobble or two in the latter race, hardly a big deal.

The one knock I'd give is that she misidentified the horse that finished fourth. If you are going to give positions, be sure you get them right. It wasn't particularly close. But if you were watching, you knew anyway. All in all she did a good job on both.

...and who is more qualified than you to determine what is awful given your recent Twitter behavior.

I especially liked you agreeing with your buddy that I only have a job at NYRA because my family left them an annuity. ( Whatever that even means ).

You're a lot of things, and many Twitter names, but one thing you are not is loyal.

She's much better than she was a while ago. She still isn't qualified at this level. Merely identifying horses correctly and calling out times doesn't make one a decent announcer. You need to call the event with emotion and some level of drama. She'll need many races to get there, if she ever does get there. It won't cost PARX anything because her calling won't prevent bettors from betting. And maybe that's the entire point.

IMO...having the announcer identify the horses correctly in a measured cadence is enough. The horses provide more than enough "emotion and drama" to satisfy me.

If someone liked emotion and drama the late Bill Garr was your kinda guy. He had a Southern California replay radio show back in the day and did his own calls. If my memory of 40+ years ago is correct he did the feature live. He made even a boat race sound like a blanket 4 horse driving finish. I would look at the charts in the next days papers and laugh. It was rough if you made an early bird bet and relied on his calls, especially if you had a lone front runner.
A horse could have got an easy 3 length lead and coasted around the track and Bill would make it sound like there were horses all over yours and they never caught a breather.

Is that the guy who did the calls in the old Las Vegas racebooks?

Have you considered that a race is a sporting event? You could program SIRI or ALEXA to call the race robotically. I guess we enjoy the racing in different ways.

A "sporting event" that lasts less than 2 minutes doesn't require much commentary, IMO. "Just the facts, Ma'am"...and I am happy.

I don't think so. The show I listened to was on KIEV 870, in Glendale Ca.
If the sportsbook caller was Garr I think I would have recognized the voice.
Also if my memory serves me right Andrew Beyer said the calls originated in downtown Las Vegas.

Maybe they'll have her in to call the Derby and Breeders Cup.
