So you can see if we consolidated, the remainder would do better than they were.

When the bettors really get a good look at WRD and Fonner...the handle will go down by about 50%.

Contraction Taking Hold---Dying Monmouth takes in Hollendorfer and Baffert
IMO, Baffert can no longer hold back the forces in Cali that wish to ban him, just like they did with Jerry Hollendorfer....The Anti-horse racing Cali mob is taking the sport of horse racing apart and destroying it, doesn't matter if you're a HOF'er, they're taking out the sport, period.
Funny how the NYRA and CD are very protective of their legit trainers and owners there, they don't want the "handle-pie" purses being more diluted by outsiders with powerful connections....Who can blame them? There is NO "too big to fail in horse racing", any longer.....Out you go.
Cleaning up the sport and contraction are a delicate balancing act, will horse racing survive it all?.....Probably, but it needs to Nationalize and have a Racing Czar in order to have an effect transformation to solidify and become a viable entity to the wagering public.

Absolutely pitiful.
When the Casinos in respective States "convince" (money) their Legislatures that Racing is enough of a drain on their Bottom Line...and their Brand...Horse Racing is dead in the water. These States ain't Kentucky...with their Horse Racing Lobby.

The 80's to mid 90's were the best from my perspective....
I started this thread almost 7 years ago and this problem had been brewing since then AND the preceding decade before that.....10 Super-hub tracks when it's fully contracted, hopefully operating with the Hong Kong model.

In 20 years, New York and Pennsylvania will be the only two horse racing states still standing. Sports betting will be all the rage, thoroughbred racing will be what harness racing now is...and the Triple Crown won't even be mentioned on SportsCenter. To all the young and enterprising horseplayers out there who are looking for a future income from this game...I offer the following suggestion:

Good book. Helped me along at a certain time. I was a fan of his Excel books before and bought this one when it came out just because.
Also liked Who's #1?: The Science of Rating and Ranking
I'm not quite ready to bail on the horses just yet though, I'm like Dave, still looking to go whaling at some point. lol

Then don’t bet it? Nobody is going to run their St. Louis horses at AP

The racetrack formerly known as Fairmont does not have their casino up and running yet, so it's too soon to sound the death knell for them.
As far as I can tell Belterra isn't doing much better with casino enhanced purses.

Kentucky can be added to the list.
The Kentucky circuit (Turfway, Keeneland, Ellis Park, Churchill Downs, Kentucky Downs) will be alive and well for many years to come due to the passage of SB120 (assuring HHR is legal). The decision to not allow full casinos and even with delayed sports betting legislation can be debated, but since the Kentucky tracks themselves own the HHR facilities there will likely never be any discussion about decoupling and purses will be strong for some time at all five tracks.

Also, on a more airy level, I think that if the Kentucky racetracks ever faced an extinction-level threat, the state would come in and subsidize it. It's too important to the state's economy and culture.
