Realize that this game has TWOFOLD parts: 1) the relative evaluation side, and 2) the gambling side.

Also realize that the gambling side should be looked at without reference to the mode (baseball, boxing, football) it is used upon. Learn when how and where to wager and spend almost as much time creating your wager as you put into evaluating your choice(s).

I would add to this that if you want to persue racing, then:

1. Keep records
2. BET your choices while you are learning -if only $2 to win.

Paper bets are not real.

This. But paper bets are really good for lulling a handicapper into a false sense of confidence.

Paper bets will convince you that you can survive a losing streak...even though you won't have any idea what a losing streak really feels like.

Play in contests like Horsetourneys, stick to Head to Head at first. You only have to beat one person to win and you can win the contest even if you "lose" money on your wagers.

1) You'll be forced to have to look at different kinds of races (and different tracks if you choose to go that route...

2) You can analyze your opponents picks (after the fact) and that might lead to you seeing something that you missed (or not).

I use $40 Head to Head contests to occasionally test some automatic selection methods.

I would suggest you view the vast amount of BetMix video tutorials on "YouTube". Here is where you can learn as well as enjoy the process, BetMix, in my humble opinion, is the best value in horse racing.
It offers many different handicapping options at a price that cannot be
replicated. I subscribe to and use BetMix everyday.

You have the option to try it out by handicapping the free race of the day.
See if it is for you.

I would say that racing can be extremely complicated

and that it's best not to try to think you can cover many different kinds of angles when starting out

find a couple of angles which you're comfortable with and then add more as you go along and are able to easily and quickly find the first ones you looked at

IMO one the best angles for a newcomer is to look for false favorites and then develop a strategy for betting against them - possibly with dutching or possibly with an exacta wheel or box

I believe the tote can give an excellent clue when there is a false favorite - the bettors leave him cold - i.e. morning line 8/5 but going off at 5/2

so many are looking for speed so the speedsters are often bet down too low to be interesting

but if there are 2 or 3 speedsters they may duel and wear themselves out setting things up for a closer let go at a nice price

................

also, during the 2 days of the Breeders Cup you will find knowledgeable analysts from DRF and elsewhere capping every single race on YouTube

you may get some fresh ideas from watching this

the Breeders Cup is a ways away but you could watch and listen to their shows from last years Breeders Cup

I'm looking to play over weekends probably, and just start to "play" for the sake of learning my own way.

So my question is, where would you send a new player to get the most affordable useful information for upcoming races?

I know we all have our different methods, and I'm the type of player that feels I need as much information as I can get to determine what information I find useful to use moving forward.

I'm open to all suggestions.
