Great voice.
It depends on your style. If you like the announcer to be the whole show, he's your guy. If you're old school and want the horses to be the show, he's not.

Am I weird that I've been going around the last few days muttering "Ready...for a start..." the way the announcer from LaD does it? I'm obsessed with that phrase and the way he says it for some reason lately...

So the answer is he's clearly the guy for Canterbury. If you've never been there look at the attendance and handle. They'll get close to 10,000 people on a Thursday night. Plus 15,000 on some weekends. And these crowds won't bet $250k. They literally have a building full of $2 bettors. Some nights the per capped wagered per person is less than $2 per race per person. Literally hundred of people go to watch and not bet.
Canterbury is the opposite of Aqueduct. It's no hardcore bettors it's an event.
So with that crowd you need a showman. He can be a straight race caller. Watch his calls of their larger stakes.
If anything it's impressive he understands his audience.

Yes, Dave when you have listened to over 90% of his race calls since he started at Canterbury in 1995 like I have, his "shtick" tends to get real old.

My favorite racecaller by far was Phil Georgeff. He was pretty straightlaced. I don't care for self-promoting in annoucing and racecalling. But I'm not the audience they are going after.

By the way, I long for the days of Tony Bentley. But he reminds me my younger days which is always going to be appealing to a guy approaching 50.

I really shouldn't complain since I dread those few days in the fall towards the end of the meet when Allen is announcing the Viking games and Grunder is on the mike.

His name is John McGarry. He, Peter Berry, and Wrona are my favorite announcers currently in the game. Travis Stone is very good as well. I'm not a fan of Colmus and I don't get the appeal.

My favorite announcer for making a 4K claimer sound like a 14mil $$$ race was the Old Atlantic City announcer. I believe it was Lederman, but not 100% sure.
"Here they come spinning out of the turn" ole Phil G. One of Chicagos finest. He was always good.
