Uber
I've never used them but I'm thinking about taking one from home from the Portland airport (about 100 miles) because of the way the shuttle schedule lines up. Problem is there doesn't seem to be any way to talk to a human being to find out things like fares or making sure that the vehicle that shows has enough space for my wife and I plus our luggage. Help please.

The app will show you the fare.
I've used Uber and Lyft a ton of times. Best thing going when you need a ride in a hurry.
You can also choose a larger vehicle if you think a regular car won't be enough for you, your wife and your luggage. It's all there on the app. (Larger vehicles will increase the fare most likely)
You can also tip your driver from the app after they drop you off. No cash needed (although you will need to register a credit card with the Uber app).

That's great, thanks. I've been a little nervous about flying in from Kauai late at night and getting my geezer self and wife back home with the least amount of heartburn.

Lyft is my fav.
Sign up early. They will email you promotions and coupons over time. 10% off would be nice on a trip that far.
I use them to get my employees to work at least 2-3 times a week

I forgot to mention that you can schedule your ride far in advance.
That gives the drivers time to figure out who is going to take that 2 hour drive with you

FWIW, Just checked, UBER won't schedule rides from airports in advance for a variety of reasons.

If it's a major airport, you're not going to have a problem. Even with a long trip. I think most Uber drivers prefer a long trip with a big fare over a whole bunch of tiny trips with tiny fares. But I've only asked this question of a handful of Uber drivers, so your mileage may vary. (see what I did there? lol)

I was talking about Lyft
I stopped using Uber a while ago. Not sure I like their values etc....
When they fought background checks on their drivers....they lost me

Just tried doing that, their calendar only goes out to the end of September. I downloaded the app and will try to schedule the ride while I'm in Kauai. Background checks seem like a good idea to me.
Last resort I'll take a cab, two hours in a cab will put a cherry on top of a spendy trip.

UBER drivers must love these rides that take them 2 hours away from their action and have to come back to their starting point with an empty backseat.

The drivers I've talked to said they much prefer the longer rides...I don't blame them...I would too.

Update
Plane late, missed the shuttle, took UberX. All good. Thanks for all the good advice. The Uber driver didn't even charge me for bending her ear for an hour and a half.
Kauai was great.
