Good Documentary
Watched this documentary last night, and it took me back to the days when there were 7 daily newspapers in NYC and journalists/columnists who could actually write stories. Add a star if you're of a certain age and have a New Yoik background.

I'm a Jersey guy - not NY or Philadelphia - but my granddad lived on Staten Island and bought the NY Daily News every day. And my Dad worked in Trenton but still bought the NY Journal-American every work day. I can only remember Jimmy Cannon from that paper and, in truth, only his name in the Sports section.
I'm keeping the legacy going by buying the NY Post every day. Phil Mushnick is my Dick Young/Jimmy Cannon.

The new Governor (Murphy) of New Jersey wants to make NJ a sanctuary state.
Do you agree with that?

i don't want anybody who is doing the right thing for himself/herself, their family, their employer, and the community they live in to be deported. If you are a detriment to yourself, your family, your community? Goodbye.
It's pretty simple.

I am not an HBO subscriber so I missed this show. I grew up in NYC and read both for as long as I can remember.
Pete Hamill and Jimmy Breslin were the two best columnists of their time, and every other time.

Excellent article, hope to catch the documentary.
I grew up in Fairfield/Bridgeport, CT and remember skimming all the tabloids at the corner drugstore, before bringing home the Times and Herald Tribune.
The Times was indeed the "newspaper of record", not the biased liberal one it has become. It's still well written, regardless.
I followed the Herald Tribune's Erwin Grossman, a harness writer/handicapper of the first degree and hit Yonkers or Roosevelt almost nightly.
Jimmy Breslin was my favorite though I had to read him outside my home, adhering to my mother's "no tabloids" rule.
"Marvin the torch" one of his regular characters, sticks in my memory.
Those were the glory days for print news, well before we all yielded to the screen.

reckless, try to catch this, maybe on Netflix or something.
howard, "Marvin the torch" was a real guy, and he is referenced in this show along with some attorney ("Klein the lawyer?")

Thanks Mike for the heads-up.
I don't have Netflix but do have a Roku stick on one of my TVs. I think there's a Netflix stream there, believe it or not. I'll look tonight and let you know the scoop.
Thanks again.

Thanks Mike, yeah I knew Marvin was real, and loved the raw and nuanced prose of Breslin.
I spent most of my free time going to the City, walking and taking in the never ending parade of wealth, hustlers and pimps.
Have a great weekend.
