Elements of Day Rates

Here is a link to an interesting site that breaks down a trainers "day rate" into its cost elements. Its for Kentucky and for a medium sized stable but is probably typical for "middle of the road" operations around the country excluding top rung and bottom rung locales.

It does make one wonder ... do trainers actually eat and live indoors ??

There was a good documentary done on Richard Mandella's racing stable a few years ago. My favorite quote from the whole show was "I'm charging these owners $100/day for training their horses, and losing money."

It really pointed out how important it is for the trainers to win races and get that extra 10% of the purse money. It also showed how ridiculously expensive it is to train horses in Southern California.
