It was just about quitting time for the day for us, but none of us could get out of the track because not only was the rest of the card cancelled, but there was water about 3 feet deep right by the main entrance to the Grandstand! Didn't get out of there until about 8 pm as I recall.

Was in the paddock before a baby maiden special weight with my wife. A massive horse reared up on his hind two legs tossing his handler right next to us. He let out a the loudest winnie you ever heard as if he he was telling all the others with a bull horn he was king of this paddock. Very intimidating.... as he looked like a step ladder fire truck right next to us. Fortunately we were not hurt and the Dutrow handlers quickly had him back under "control" The horse was well named----"The Big Beast"

August 6,1986. 2nd race winner Allumeuse was dq'd from 1st, and had nothing to do with the inquiry. Stewards realized the mistake a few minutes later but could not change the results once they were official. I was standing with a bunch of people in the grandstand and the place went crazy....

One day I was there in 1982 and Derby Winner Gato Del Sol was running in an Allowance race for horses that had "never won 2 races other than".
At that time they still saddled the horses under the trees in the back and then when they rang the bell all of the horses would walk thru the crowds
as they gathered up their picnic blankets to clear the way.
I went back there to see the Derby winner and walked with him over to the paddock. I turned my head to talk to my dad and I didn't realize that "Gato"
had stopped walking because some of the people had to be clear out.
I walked right into him on his right shoulder.
I still remember him looking back at me as if to say "boy, are you stupid
I am standing here!!!"
He won that day at 3/5.

I have friends who are locals. So one of the first few times they took me to the Spa( I was 17 at the time) they did the old "here, try this".....Not wanting to be on the receiving end of what was surely to be an endless barrage of ball busting, I took a big swig from the Big Spring. I thought I had drank a combination of rotten eggs and shaken up club soda. Yep, they all got a good laugh at my expense. Bastards.
Watched as a Peace Officers removed a really drunk guy from the back yard after he tripped over one of those big metal wire trash containers and went ass over tea kettle. The guy was so plastered, he could not even come close to getting up.
