I was amazed when I first heard how many consecutive times he won the Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy when The Andy Griffith Show was running (something like six years in a row). What dominance! Definitely a one-of-a-kind character that I can't imagine anybody else playing as well, in the same league with Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker, Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, and Yul Brynner as the King of Siam. He'll certainly be remembered.

Alltime favorite character, on my alltime favorite show. There won't be another Barney Fife. Don was a physical comedy genius, he didn't need to say a word and you knew what was going on in the story by his movements and facial expressions. What a hoot!
RIP Don Knotts.

..and of course:

...he made his whole body a weapon.

Yeah, we lost another one today... he will be missed. My Dad's favorite TV character of all time. One of mine too...

Grew up laughing with him....funny guy.
Used to love the way he and Gomer wroked together.

A Pox on Fox News Radio who, at 6pm tonight, identified his character as "Barry" Fife! Sheez.

Goodbye, Barn, we'll miss you

Don Knotts had a great gift, the ability to make us laugh.

Barney Fife: What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a man take off a dress before?

A line from his obituary on MSN:

"He treasured his comedic roles and could point to only one role that wasn’t funny, a brief stint on the daytime drama Search for Tomorrow."

I smile just picturing that. (I understand those episodes aired in 1953-1955.) (I believe Morey Amsterdam did a brief stint (as a kidnapper!) on The Young and the Restless, so there's no telling who you might see on daytime TV!)(Of course, though, that was long after The Dick Van Dyke Show, rather than before.)

One more comment:

In Alan Jackson's recent country song, "Where I Come From", there's a lyric about his being pulled over by a cop that goes, "Barney stopped me with his gun ten minutes after midnight," and you know instantly what he's referring to. Barney Fife really became universal.

Yeah, I hated that. His name was "Ralph Furley" those of you who know me, know how close that is to my real name. When you are in the 8th grade and the biggest wingnut on TV has a name so close to yours..........you might imagine it was pure hell..........BTW..........that was on the heels of "Ralph Mouth" from happy days.

I heard on Paul Harvey yesterday that Andy Griffith was at Don's bedside when he died............. very appropriate if you ask me. What a pair of friends they must have been.........
