help with variant

How do you use the track variant to handicap? Can you also give me a book to read to better ideas!

Your best bet is to read and re-read Picking Winners by Andy Beyer. It's a fun read and you'll likely enjoy the learning process. It's a classic. In fact... all 3 of his books are fantastic. That's where I would start if I were you.

Just so you are clear -- people don't use the variant directly when they handicap. The TV is an indicator of whether the race times need to be adjusted based on someone's interpretation of how the track surface is playing. If two horses come out of different 6F races both timed in 1:11, the horse that ran on a slower track (higher variant) is perceived as actually running a better (faster) race. This is the idea behind the speed figures that you see created by various vendors (and some individual handicappers).

I concur with Michael about the Beyer books but there are some others that can be helpful too, such as Figure Handicapping by James Quinn or the classic Modern Pace Handicapping by Tom Brohamer. If you are not going to create your own figures, I think that the Brohamer book would be the most helpful in furthering your understanding of handicapping. And if you are looking for other books just visit the Handicapping Library section of PA. Many people have posted on the subject of good books that may help handicappers. Be advised that many books are out of print but may be available through specialized book sellers or auction sites.

Handicapping Variants do work, very applicable in finding excellet horses shipping as well as track competition related to speed.
