Ditto.
Never, ever, had to sweat a single cent I've lost.
It's still a pisser to lose - but the mortgage is always paid, there's food on the table and in the kids' college funds.

I could have borrowed to bet, i had people who trusted me and whatnut, but i didnt want to put myself in a position to have to tell someone "sorry i just cant pay you". I couldnt ever be 100 pct sure that i could pay them back, so i just never borrowed....keeping them as friends was important, and if you borrow and don't pay back, you could lose a good friend.
I've also never lent anyone money that i knew was going to be bet. I had a friend many years ago ask me for a loan and i was like "i cant give you a loan, you're just going to lose it at the track" and the "Friend" got all upset and was like "if you lend me the money i can do whatever i want with it". He got agitated that i was essentially saying that i would lend him the money only if he didnt bet it on the races. Of course, i was like "you've got to be kidding me, im not lending you money so you can blow it at the races"

Anyone that has ever placed a wager through a bookie or other non-ADW has technically bet with borrowed money.

Getting cash advances with a credit card in order to gamble is, also, a bad situation most of the time.
Way too tempting to run up a tab, and end up screwed.

my old saying is, that the only people that gamble are those that can't afford too.
i have borrowed money plenty of times from credit cards to gamble on new issue mutual bank and insurance stocks and did very well doing it. i still buy those issues today, but i don't need to use credit cards any longer.

Borrowed 20 bucks to fill out a bunch of bets. Gave the money right back after the race. Of course I hit it. Otherwise, I would have been tapped out.
That was the first and only time I ever borrowed.

I knew an OTB manager that bet with the houses money. It did not end up well for her.

and that will follow her around for the rest of her life .
My feeling is the thrill of the sport is gone if you are going over
your head and out of control .
