If Trump does anything before the election he will be accused of acting like an emperor and federal officers/troops will be called gestapo by Democrat politicians.
Hammer brain voters on both the left and right will buy into the bull and vote Trump out of office.
If Trump gets re-elected the name calling won't matter and hopefully he will enforce his red lines.

The major damage is in cities with communist mayors, most of the decent residence have left most likely. The fact however, that the she-devil DC mayor allowed the attacks on people exiting the RNC and did nothing should be criminal. She should be in jail.

It is a fine line but I have to agree. Like Obama told the Russian Foreign Minister, Trump will have more flexibility after the election.
