What do you think was a main driver of application of lite weight materials we have now?
You seem to think that progress in scientific areas is something you set your mind to knowing where you are going before you get there.
That is not the way the world works in the main.
Many discoveries were/are "by accident" , a spin-off of some other goal based research project.
By the way , just as in foxholes, where there are no dims or pugs, the same is true in the lab.
