Tampa Bay Race #5 call

With about 10 jumps to the wire in the race My Boy Mika(5-2) is in front good as Richard Grunder yells out, "My Boy Myka turns away all challengers and will take them START TO FINSH!" As he says that a 16-1 and a 31-1 explode into overdrive in about 5 jumps and nail the 5-2 and basically already called winner at the wire.
I'm not poking fun at caller or even people who bet race. It stinks if you had that horse to win or in exacta. It's just amazing that it's never over till it's over AND imagine this was the radio days and you have My Boy Myka! The race is called as already finished and you're counting your money.

I was watching and the guy made a mistake. It certainly looked as if the #1 would win. Amazing finish that even fooled a vet like Grunder.

If you had the #1 grunder is not the reason you lost - blame it on the #4 !!

I know the feeling and the first tendency is to blame the "messenger". Grunder....how could you do that to me? Then, hopefully, rationality sets in. Since I didn't bet the race i thought it was funny. Then I thought about those that did bet and apologized.

Google Clem McCarthy's call of the Preakness on the radio.

As I started reading this, I was remembering a few instances of this happening..in particular a race at Marquis Downs 30 or so years ago where something similar happened....race called by a young Richard Grunder!

I guess I can see how he did it but isn't the numero uno rule in calling a race to wait til someone hits the wire to declare a wiener?

I remember literally my first week announcing races putting a horse like that away and calling him the winner only to see another horse come flying and just miss. sweating out that photo (even though i know maybe 8 people were watching) was so bad, i vowed never to put a horse away unless he is for sure gone goodbye!

I get really tired of guys defending Grunder. He's been a race caller for many years. I remember when he called races at Canterbury for a few years and he got the calls messed up then and he still does the same thing now at Tampa. He may be a nice honorable God fearing man, but as a race caller he is near the bottom.
