The weirdest name for me by a country mile is Wrszcsz (or something like that). The name was pronounced 'rizzitch' and was the name of a town in eastern Europe somewhere.

Never mind that, I'd like to know who the hell is the person in charge of naming horses? The breeder?
What the heck do they use: a random word generator? Many times seems that way to me!

Turdunken-ran last summer at Arlington. What a rotten name!
Romacacca-Jessica Pecheco wouldn't even say the name.
Thong or Panties-nice to think about but crazy name.

Nobody is in charge, you submit your horse's name you want (up to six per horses) to the Jockey Club, and a group of people there review all of them and then let you know which one you got. I remember reading one time that Secretariat was the sixth choice, but I'm not sure of that. I do know that the first choice for Lure was Love (he was out of a mare named Endear). In retrospect, I'm glad Lure was the final verdict.
There's some guy in Arkansas who named all his horses Humble One, Humble Two, etc...they stopped him after he got to something like 17. Those Karakourum (sp?) people stick their stable name on the front of everything they have. Kentucky-based owner Bert Klein uses Bert in a lot of his horses: Hurricane Bertie, Allaboutbertie, etc. Likewise for Ken Ramsey using Kitten, his wife's nickname: Kitten's Joy...now that horse is a sire, there will be a ton of Kitten's hitting the racetrack...

My favorite horse name is "Bill". He was an old claiming campaigner with an interesting quirk, at least when he ran at Ellis Park. After the race gallop out, the horse would refuse to come back to be unsaddled, just stand there. The first time it happened, he got a ride back in the ambulance. He decided he liked getting a ride, so every time he ran, he would just stand there and wait for his "chauffeur"...hilarious to see it happen.

One of Durkin's favorites too:

I thought I had read somewhere that suggestive names like "Hoof Hearted" and "Peony's Envy" are not allowed. How does the Jockey Club decide what to allow? Are there set rules?

Even though I don't remember much about him just standing there after the race, I actually called "Bill" at Players Bluegrass Downs years ago. That's a name that sticks in your head!

Iams Bound was a name that didn't generate a lot of confidence.
