Regardless of who wins tomorrow, what are we going to do about Korea and the nukes?

At some point, after they've said screw you enough times, we are going to come to an impasse... Then what?

What happens when negotiating, deals, and rationalizing is exhausted? What's the next step?

Unless North and South Korea resume open warfare, the Chinese and Japanese hold the face cards in that region. Neither really fears a nuclear attack by North Korea. Beyond negotiations, there is little recourse. As long as we're bogged down in Iraq, how much we are willing to pay is the question.

one small but growing problem for us in that area is the South koreans aren't all that keen on us, and growing less so.

My cousin is over there, he says the south koreans would just as soon spit on you as say hello.

I think Iran is going to be the flashpoint if one exists in the near future....nothing is going to happen re: N. Korea.

We have tried offering aid to North Korea without success. When I said what we're willing to pay, I meant the part of the iceburg under the water, beneath the $-Billions North Korea would demand. In order to give us regional support versus North Korea, China and other countries want additional economic/trade concessions far more costly than aid to North Korea. And China is increasingly adamant that the Taiwan chip has to be put in play on the table.

I think this is a very hairy issue for whoever is in place tomorrow.. It's an interesting position when you have no more ideas to deal or negotiate with them AND any military action could result in a nuclear war..

Bombing is a difficult answer, since you don't want to cause a nuclear accident in North Korea that contaminates parts of all the countries around it (South Korea, China, Japan, Russia). Mighty difficult situation, and thus the need to tread lightly. Before N. Korea had the capability, that was the time to bomb (thanks again, Bill Clinton). Now we have to be guarded, so we don't seriously piss off the 4 key neighbors which we could use decent realtions with).

Isn't 50 years on the border long enough for S Korea to decide if they are going to protect themselves?
Ben Franklin said after the AM REV- "you have liberty if you can keep it". Same goes for the other countries whose ass we save.
We should just make sure we are strong enough to serve up a good high-tech ass-kicking, then let the natives hold on the benefits.
Too many countries want us to do all the fighting and then are too lazy or too socialist to protect themselves, like France with the high % of Muslims in their country now.
This is why our Patriot Act is important to keep.

You can cripple the operation without causing an accident that spreads radiation. You can put it out of business for years at a time if you want.

Israel did it to Iraq, June 7, 1981.

I thought Isreal got to Iran's nuclear operations (built with help from the French) before they were up and running. I wish we'd have gotten to North Korea's in the same way, but they were very secretly violating the aggreements made with the Clinton Admin.

I'm sure if we knew enough about what N. Korea has, where the key stuff is and how to destroy it, we'd have done it already, or will do it once that information and plans are available. Easy for Kerry to complain to high-heaven, and make all kinds of grand statments about what he would have done, but hard for our military to make strategic strikes in a responsible manner. I'm sure the same military that Bush currently leads and Kerry wants to lead, are/will tell them what the situation is and how they feel is best to proceed.

You would rather refuse to act to secure our nation, to put our defense up to a "global test", to suck up to rouque, criminal nations that have been making billions of dollars off the oil for food program, who have stood by while tens of thousands of Iraqis' were murdered and tortures rather than risk losing your cash cow. You would rather follow a man twho turned his back on his fellow soldiers by faking three minaor injuries to get out of combat as fast as possible, taking his "movie crew" with him to doucment his allegations of atrocites, which he claims occured and which he claims he helped to committ, a mna who has never had the courage to stand up for himself, who has repeatedly sought out rich women to support him, a man who slept for 20 years inthe senate, a man who who is a proven liar on almost every issue, excpet "partial bitrht muder.
