For me, Pete Christlieb shows much more range in Deacon Blues than the Baker Street, roughly 8 note solo repeated, as well as the context of my favored jazz rock/swing dance vs. Rafferty's more slow dance setting. I've read, perhaps wrongly that the saxophonist did some improvising within Baker Street? Not sure Fagen would have put up with that- studio perfectionists and all.

Sounds like you know A LOT more about the sax than I. I will concede that the solo in Deacon Blue is a more complicated solo. But Bakers Street also includes a great guitar solo, which Deacon Blues lacks. But hey it was all good.
For me, I define the summer of 78 by 5 songs, Deacon Blues, Bakers Street, Miss You (great lyrics), life's Been Good, and Reminiscing - not a great instrumental song just a good song.
I think Bakers Street was my favorite - brings back memories of driving on HWY 80 in Omaha at night, shifting gears to this song and playing either air sax or air guitar. Driving past the blue neon AKSARBEN sign that was visible from the interstate. I couldn't wait to get to the track the next day. Life was good.

Streets of Baltimore.w
I was listening to country classics--and heard a really nice tune by Bobby Bare called "The Streets of Baltimore"
I got a chuckle out of that, as this was the last picture I saw of "The Streets of Baltimore".
Guess Baltimore has changed since that tune came out.
