ROI Question

It could be because it's late and I am having a literal brain cramp staring at computer screens, but for some reason no matter how I do this math on the spreadsheet, it looks off--

If you had a winner at 6/5. $10 W/P wager

Risking $10 to win 12 on the win
Risking $10 to win 2 on the place.

You win- Collect $34. $22 for the win. $12 for the place.

When calculating ROI....

Do you consider it $10 win bet to win $12 or do you record the win as $22.
While recording the $10 place bet to win $2 or do you record the win as $12

It would make sense to me that
$10 win wager with a return of $12.00
$10 place wager with a return of $2.00

Total ticket cashed results in $10+$10+$12+$2= $34
Original stake is $20- Returned is $14
ROI is 0.70 for this wager.

The win could only ever be the profit.
$12 on the win - $2 on the place.
70% ROI on the $20 invested.

Thank you. That’s what I kept thinking but the formula kept looking off and had me using my toes to count. Oh it was a sad few minutes over here.

the link is to an ROI calculator -

it's for investments and defaults to a four year time period but you can just ignore that and ignore the annualized ROI unless that is what you are calculating and ignore the investment length - it can be for any length of time - a day, a week, etc.

the amount invested should be the total amount you wagered

the amount returned should be the total amount you ended up with
