50 years of handicapping - the Toteboard
I find the toteboard to be very
useful in validating my selection.
I download the toteboard data about
8-10 minutes before post time. I
look at the win, place, show and
exacta payoffs. I think it helps
to show where all the money is going.

Yup. Best bet is to look at the pools after the gate opens, just ask formula_2002.
But seriously...also look at the DD pools.

It pretty much requires having some clue of what the whales and the public might do, a decent odds line. I'm starting to see some patterns where horses that were once 4/5 are now 1/9.

Win pools seldom vary from the daily double pools coupling the favorite in the previous race.

Bunch of crap…. An informed opinion about an overlay … based on sound handicapping principals ( pace, breeding, works, form, trainer, other entries etc) …. And the proper wager structure—- is the key to winning in a game with a high takeout hurdle …. Not watching the tote. Thank you for playing….

It isn't very efficient to use a jackhammer to slice a cake.
