Gerard Melancon Arrested
Quote:
Jockey Gerard Melancon was arrested Aug. 26 in the final days of the Evangeline Downs meet in Opelousas, La., on a charge of “unnatural stimulation of horses,” according to the St. Landry Parish sheriff's office and the Louisiana state police.
Melancon, 55, was arrested by state police and taken to the St. Landry Parish sheriff. A state police public information officer said he could not comment further on the arrest or provide details because there is an “ongoing investigation.” An official with the St. Landry sheriff's office confirmed the arrest but said the case was in the hands of the state police.
The St. Landry Parish clerk of court said Melancon was released after bail was set at $20,000. Following his arrest, Melancon resumed riding Aug. 27-28, closing weekend at the Opelousas track. He is named on horses at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City on Sept. 4.

For the conspiracy theorist in all of us - the article notes that Melancon IS the only jockey to have filed separately (rather than just as part of the Jockeys Guild) in a lawsuit against HISA's constitutionality.

"Unaturally stimulating horses?"
I don't want to know, but is like violating the whip rules?

Purely a coincidence because if HISA pulled something shady and set up Melancon they would be put out of business and sued from here to eternity. I believe Melancon is guilty and also believe there is a small percentage of jockeys doing shady things. IMO mostly at the smaller tracks. There is not one jockey out there that hasn’t been offered a bride or to manipulate a race for cash during his/her career. Most probably won’t admit it but it sure as heck is true. Thankfully most jockeys do what’s right. Some get into drugs and gambling and start making terrible choices because of financial reasons. I pray for them all.

Most of the times when one of my riders used a battery it was given to them by the trainer in the paddock. One told me the first time he used one he shocked himself constantly all the way to the gate.

You "believe" the man is guilty based on that article?? I truly hope you never get near a courtroom as a juror...and you're right..the government would never do anything shady...by the way..
